Bindi comes from the Sanskrit bindu which means small particle, a dot or drop. It is worn by Hindu women from South and Southeast Asia. It is placed between eyebrows on the forehead.  One of the main significances of this decoration is to denote the commitment of married Hindu women. Moreover, Bindi represents the THIRD EYE which retains energy and good concentration. The traditional bindi usually has red color which expresses honor, love and prosperity, however, it can be also found in white, red or multi-colored. According to shape and material, it can appear in various types such as heart, tear, star, half moon, leaf and snake as well as be made of glass beads, gold plating, thin metal, diamonds, pears, rhinestones and sequins.  Self-adhesive bindis or, so-called sticker bindis are very popular nowadays. They are easy to apply on forehead and can be very fascinating and charming.

During the mid-1990s, the bindis started to be worn by many celebrities. For instance, Gwen Stefani, the singer of the band No Doubt, wore a bindi during their performance of the song “Don’t Speak”. Many people including teenagers and other celebrities such as Julia Roberts in her film “Pretty Woman”, Selena Gomez, Shakira, Nicole Scherzinger, Miley Cyrus, Jessica Simspon wore a bindi many times for example Selena Gomes wore a bindi  at her performance of her new single “Come and Get it” on MTV Awards last year, even though she was criticized many times before. Also, at the music festival in Indio, California (known as Coachella), there had been celebrities that wore bindis regardless of the religious symbol of the decoration. These celebrities: Hyland, Vanessa Hugdes, Katy Perry and the youngest of the Kardashian clan – Kylie Jenner were taking pictures and uploading it on Instagram.  In conclusion we may say that these days, bindi seems to be the most attractive accessory prefered to be worn as a fashion statement rather than religious significance.
